Costa Rica 7-Day Itinerary: Volcanoes, Waterfalls & Pacific Coast
A week in Costa Rica is enough for two well-lived ecosystems, not five rushed ones. This itinerary picks volcano country and the Pacific, and cuts the most common mistake: burning day 1 and day 7 on the road.

Best time: December–April (dry season) or September.
Day 1 — Arrive at SJO → Sarchí (35 min)
Land, grab the rental, and within the hour you are settled in — no 4-hour jet-lagged drive. Dinner in town, early night.
Day 2 — Bajos del Toro Waterfalls
Early start. Catarata del Toro in the morning, lunch in town, Blue Falls in the afternoon if you have the energy. Back to Sarchí. Alternative: Poás Volcano + Else Kientzler Garden.
Day 3 — Sarchí → La Fortuna (2 h 30 min via Zarcero)
A scenic drive with a stop at Zarcero’s topiary park. Arrive by midday, spend the afternoon at the hot springs at the foot of Arenal.
Day 4 — Full Day in Arenal
Hanging bridges in the morning (best time for birding), La Fortuna Waterfall in the afternoon — 500 steps — sunset at El Silencio lookout with the volcano straight ahead.
Day 5 — Adventure or Río Celeste
Class III–IV rafting on the Balsa River, or a full-day trip to Río Celeste (2 h each way) — the blue river fed by Tenorio Volcano. If you only add one extra thing this whole trip, make it this one.
Day 6 — La Fortuna → Manuel Antonio (4 h)
Transfer day. Leave after breakfast, stop for lunch in Jacó or on the beach. Afternoon by the ocean.
Day 7 — Manuel Antonio National Park
Get there at opening. Sloths, capuchin monkeys, and beaches inside the park boundary. Free afternoon.
Day 8 — Manuel Antonio → Sarchí (3 h) → flight out next morning
Back to where you started. Last night 35 minutes from the airport, bags packed without a rush, rental car returned in daylight.
Before You Go
The mandatory insurance is not in the online quote. Every rental carries legally required liability insurance — that “$8-a-day car” usually becomes $45–60. Not a scam, just the law.
Book Poás and Manuel Antonio in advance. Both use timed online entry and sell out. Manuel Antonio is closed Mondays.
Do not drive at night. Poor lighting, tight curves, loose cattle. It is the reason your first and last nights belong in the Western Valley.
