Costa Rica 21-Day Itinerary: The Complete Coast-to-Coast Route
At three weeks you are not on vacation anymore — you are covering a country. This route adds what short trips always sacrifice: the Caribbean, the Southern Pacific, and high-altitude cloud forest.

Days 1–2 — Sarchí
Acclimatization, Bajos del Toro waterfalls, Poás. Start at 1,000 m in cool air before the coast heat — and 35 minutes from the airport instead of four hours.
Days 3–5 — Puerto Viejo and Cahuita (4 h 30 min)
The Caribbean feels like a different country within the country: Afro-Caribbean influence, coconut-milk cooking, calypso, warmer water. Cahuita National Park (donation entry) and Punta Uva.
Days 6–7 — Tortuguero (via La Pavona, 3 h + 1 h 30 min by boat)
Only reachable by boat or small plane. Canals, manatees, and green sea turtle nesting from July through October.
Days 8–10 — La Fortuna / Arenal (4 h 30 min)
Hot springs, waterfalls, and a full day at Río Celeste.
Days 11–12 — Monteverde (3 h)
Cloud forest, canopy, and a night walk.
Days 13–15 — Guanacaste (3 h)
Sámara, Nosara, or Rincón de la Vieja.
Days 16–17 — Uvita and the Osa Peninsula (5 h)
Marino Ballena National Park. If you have the stamina, Corcovado has the highest biodiversity density on the planet, according to National Geographic. Requires a certified guide.
Days 18–19 — San Gerardo de Dota (4 h)
High-altitude cloud forest at 2,200 m, genuinely cold. The best place on earth to spot the resplendent quetzal (peak February–May). Trout farms and silence.
Day 20 — San Gerardo → Sarchí (3 h)
Closing the loop. Last night 35 minutes from the airport.
Day 21 — Flight home
Unhurried departure, rental returned in daylight.
