Two blocks away, the F\u00e1brica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro<\/strong> workshop (open since the 1920s) lets you watch artisans hand-paint the traditional mandala patterns that made Sarch\u00ed famous, using techniques and natural pigments passed down for generations. A family workshop making its own wood souvenirs — hand-painted pieces plus laser-cut and custom CNC work — on Avenida 8 in Sarch\u00ed Norte. It is also one of the main wholesale suppliers to the big souvenir chains elsewhere in the country, so buying straight from the source here usually beats what you would pay for the same piece in San Jos\u00e9 or at the airport.<\/p>

Over 2,000 species across 7 hectares. Wide trails, nearly empty on weekdays — perfect for the first morning while jet lag still runs the show.<\/p>

4. Feria del Agricultor de Grecia (20 min)<\/em><\/h3>

This is where the tourist mask comes off, and it happens to be one of the best farmers markets in all of Costa Rica<\/strong>. Rows of produce picked that morning, fruit that does not exist back home, coffee roasted last week, cheese, plants, and small food stalls where the locals eat breakfast. Bring colones in cash and an appetite — and go hungry.<\/p>

Friday is the long day and Saturday morning is the busy, lively one. Get there early on Saturday for the best selection.<\/p>

Cypress trees pruned into arches, elephants, faces, and shapes that should not be possible with a hedge trimmer. One gardener started it in 1964 and never stopped. Behind it, a church with a hand-painted interior. Grab some palmito cheese on the corner — it is Zarcero’s specialty.<\/p>

Terraza 65<\/h3>

Family-run steakhouse in Sarch\u00ed Sur, known for its grilled cuts and cocktails, occasional live saxophone in the evenings. Our go-to recommendation when guests want a proper sit-down dinner without driving far — good for a celebration night or your last dinner before flying out.<\/p>

Good pick if your group wants different things without arguing about where to eat.<\/p>

A 90-meter waterfall dropping inside the crater of an extinct volcano. About 400 steps down and the same back up. Absolutely worth it.<\/p>

11. Blue Falls of Costa Rica \/ R\u00edo Agrio (1 h – 1 h 15 min)<\/em><\/h3>

Eight turquoise-blue waterfalls that look edited — it is mineral content from volcanic water. One of them is literally named Catarata Tesoro Escondido<\/strong> (Hidden Treasure Falls). Full trail circuit, requires decent fitness.<\/p>

12. Pozo Azul and the Bajos del Toro valley (1 h 15 min)<\/em><\/h3>

The whole town is tucked between two mountain walls at 1,500 m. Fog, trout farms, sweater-weather temperatures. It is the closest thing to Monteverde without Monteverde’s price tag or tour buses.<\/p>

13. Po\u00e1s Volcano National Park (1 h 15 min)<\/em><\/h3>

One of the largest active craters in the world, viewed from a lookout just 300 meters away. Go early — clouds roll in and block the view after about 10 a.m.<\/p>
